Our evening
started with Bob Taggart introducing Linda O’Malley our guest speaker from
Erskine Care. Most of us grew up knowing this as Erskine Hospital not realising
it had started as the Princess Louise Hospital in 1916. Now in it’s 89th year it
is changing; yet again, to just “ Erskine”.
Though relatively new to the staff Linda
has acquired significant skillls in communicating her message with warmth,
vivacity and precision. We got a history of Erskine from it’s early start up to
the date nearly ten years ago when a rebuild was decided upon and fundraising
started.
Then
came a short video taken within Erskine and featuring the stories of current
residents before and after their arrival. It should be compulsory viewing for
the [political classes.
At our
earlier tea break Linda had picked up a volume from our Library and she read
from it the story of “Tom, Dick and Harry” and pointed out that the “gardener”
of that organisation, now 98 years old, was her partner when going out to
schools to introduce them to Erskine.
More general information followed not
just on the spread of Erskine to Edinburgh and elsewhere but on the tremendous
support they enjoy from the general public. Noted were a group of long standing
supporters who were given certificates to mark their long years of fund raising.
Clearly the same sense of purpose and high morale runs through the staff. The
Edinburgh staff having reached the finals of the National Training awards and
staff from Erskine mains and the Erskine Home in bishopton having gained the
first Royal College of Nursing Palliative Care Certificates in
Scotland.
Our
Vice-Chairman and Wings Organiser took great pleasure in thanking Linda on
behalf of all present.
