.A visit from the Royal Air Forces
Association [ RAFA ] last Wednesday was “excellent” according to the
Ravenswood Primary School - with children hearing first-hand accounts
of wartime life.
Speakers included Geoff Payne, Jim
Clark and Bob Mackenzie who explained who RAFA are, and gave a slide show
presentation as well as showing the children some memorabilia. A spokesman
for the school said it was excellent - the kids loved it. The men were
lovely, really nice and they had a chat with the children.
Group Secretary Mr Clark gave a talk
on the home front in the morning and in the afternoon Mr Mackenzie gave a talk
on his experiences of the Kindertransport, the system where Jewish children were
evacuated from Nazi Germany and other occupied territories to Britain, and he
told the children how he had to leave home at the age of eight.
Group Chairman Mr Payne acted as
compere introducing the speakers as well as displaying artefacts and handing out
souvenir badges. Grateful acknowledgement was made of a gift to RAFA funds.
The children found it very interesting
and asked lots of questions. It was very enjoyable for them, for the teachers
and for us. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
We acknowledge, with thanks, our
indebtedness to the
